Academy FY 2015 Annual Report Released

How does APPEL support achievement at NASA? Find out in the Academy’s Fiscal Year (FY) 2015 Annual Report.

In FY 2015, NASA and its partners advanced key programs in service of Earth-based initiatives while surging forward on the journey to Mars with Exploration Flight Test 1 (EFT-1), the first flight of the Orion spacecraft. APPEL supported the agency’s efforts by continuing to promote learning through its world-class curriculum and development programs while innovating new resources to enhance the Academy’s value to NASA’s technical workforce.

A key focal point for the year was supporting achievement through classroom-based offerings, novel interactive materials, customer engagement, and partnering with other NASA organizations. APPEL introduced distinctive new courses to enhance the skills and knowledge needed to advance mission success. The Academy collaborated with the NASA Galaxie Library, Skillsoft, and other groups at NASA to bring a variety of supplemental resources—including Books 24/7 and the NASA Engineering & Safety Center (NESC) Video Library—to practitioners through the APPEL Catalog. In addition, tools like the PM&SE Competency Model were augmented to better serve practitioners in achieving their development goals.

Externally, the Academy’s accomplishments were recognized throughout the year. APPEL earned the prestigious honor of being named the “best academy in the world” by Human Systems International, a division of the Project Management Institute, and received the 2015 Exemplar Award from the International Association for Continuing Education and Training (IACET) for significant contributions to the field of continuing education and training.

The office of the Chief Knowledge Officer (CKO) also had a strong year as they continued to engage NASA’s vibrant knowledge community and expand knowledge services and capabilities across the agency. Their efforts advanced critical knowledge capture and lessons learned sharing as they leveraged best practices from other federal agencies, industry, and academia.

Together, APPEL and the CKO continued to lead NASA toward a strong future founded on a skilled workforce and an agency that captures and leverages its vast store of knowledge.
