How do I know if I am eligible for SELDP?
How do I know if SELDP is the best developmental program for me?
SELDP is best when a participant has acquired a strong discipline and/or SE understanding, training (see prerequisites), and experience available from their home center and is ready to expand that understanding to an agency-wide approach to systems engineering. Participants must also have the desire and aptitude for leading others and be willing to move beyond being just a technical expert.
How are participants selected?
How are participants matched to available assignments?
What WBS number do I charge my time to?
Labor is paid by the home center. The WBS should be obtained from the participant’s supervisor or training office.
Who approves my leave?
Time cards are maintained by the home center. Leave should be requested of the developmental assignment supervisor, and if agreed to, submitted to the home supervisor for approval.
How often do I get to come home from my assignment?
The SELDP will pay for quarterly trips to the home center to maintain updated communication with the participant’s supervisor and manager. Home or assignment centers can supplement these trips but participants are encouraged to maximize the time at their assignment location.
When can my detail assignment start?
Assignment start dates differ depending on individual developmental needs, assignment project phase, and availability of funds. Once selected, SELDP participants will work with SELDP Program Management and their home and assignment centers to determine the best start date.
How does SELDP differ from the SE development program that my center offers?
SELDP targets the unique needs of NASA’s systems engineers. It combines a combination of technical and leadership development and training activities designed to prepare systems engineers to take on the next level of complexity. SELDP provides agency-wide experience and understanding not usually available at the center level. SELDP assignments meet the unique phase specific development participants need to gain a full and complete understanding of the systems engineering process.
Can I use my current mentor for SELDP?
A developmental assignment mentor who has specific knowledge about the project and work to be performed will be assigned to each participant. Participants are encouraged to maintain contact with their home mentor throughout the program to support their developmental efforts.
If I am not selected, will I be considered if I reapply?
If you are not selected for the SELDP development program, you are encouraged to pursue development activities through center-wide training courses, self-study, or work assignments. You are encouraged to reapply for the next class.
Will I be promoted after completion of the program?
Participating in a development program does not guarantee promotion upon completion. Development programs are designed to assist employees in being prepared for future leadership, project management and systems engineering roles and develop the skills necessary to step into new challenges. Prior to applying to a development program, you and your supervisor should discuss and document a re-entry plan that is a component of your individual development plan. The re-entry plan should describe how you will apply the knowledge and skills you have gained in the program. Upon graduating from the program, you and your supervisor should review and execute the plan to ensure maximum transfer of learning and return on investment.
