Masters with Masters 9 (Bill Gerstenmaier and Kuniaki Shiraki)
The International Space Station has taught us what it really means to engage in international collaboration, according to Bill Gerstenmaier and Dr. Kuniaki Shiraki.
Gerstenmaier, NASA Associate Administrator for Space Operations, and Shiraki, Executive Director of the Human Space Systems and Utilization Mission Directorate at the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), shared personal reflections on the role of international collaboration in complex programs in a Masters with Masters training event at the James E. Webb Auditorium at NASA Headquarters on July 11, 2011.

Shuttle Software AnomalyCase Study–A few minutes after the Shuttle Endeavour reached orbit for STS-126 on Nov. 14, 2008, mission control noticed that the shuttle did not automatically transfer two communications processes from launch to orbit configuration. Primary communications continued to use S-band frequencies after they should have transferred to the more powerful Ku-band. The link between the shuttle and its payload — the Payload Signal Processor (PSP)–remained configured for a radio link rather than switching.
