On May 28, 1999, the Space Shuttle Endeavor made the first space shuttle docking with the International Space Station.

Prior to the docking, crewmembers conducted a spacewalk (also known as an extravehicular activity, or EVA) to prepare for the mating and transfer of 1,360 kilos (nearly 3,000 lbs.) of equipment from the Shuttle to the International Space Station (ISS). During the EVA, astronauts installed foot restraints, handrails and tool bags for future use by spacewalkers.

At the time of STS-96, the ISS consisted of the U.S.-built Unity module and the Russian-built Zarya module.
