NASA has undertaken countless firsts; breaking new ground in human space flight. Those firsts also extend to various management and business practices. As human space flight missions became more complex and longer in duration, it became clear to leadership that the crews needed to stay focused on their missions versus the needs of day-to-day life on earth. A unique form of support was needed.
Even before the International Space Station (ISS) declared assembly complete in 2011, the orbiting outpost had been open to scientists and researchers. To encourage its use as a technology and research laboratory and test bed, a new classification of flight hardware was proposed – Experimental Flight Hardware, classification 1-E.
As with any exploratory expedition, whether it be Columbus’s journey to find the New World, Ernest Shackleton’s polar expedition, or NASA preparing for humans to return to the moon to stay, providing the crew light-weight, compact, nutritious and tasty food is a challenge.
