Knowledge Community Face-to-Face Planned at Jet Propulsion Laboratory

A biannual meeting of NASA’s Knowledge Community is scheduled in July.

NASA’s Knowledge Community, including Chief Knowledge Officers (CKO), Points of Contact (POC) and Knowledge Services Leads, is set to convene July 11-13, 2017, at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). The community gathers in accordance with NASA Policy Directive 7120.6 and at the recommendation of the Aerospace Safety Advisory Panel (ASAP) in order to share leading practices, deepen understanding of lessons learned and how they impact mission success and failure, learn from industry partners, and work on agency-wide problem-solving.

Objectives of the biannual meeting are to:

  • Provide a forum for benchmarking and innovative solutions that can be applied to an integrated systematic approach for critical knowledge priorities
  • Build on knowledge and ideas from previous face-to-face meetings
  • Build networks that enhance the sharing of knowledge strategies and exchange best practices
  • Create an environment of learning and reflection

Topics include JPL leadership overviews about why practicing good knowledge capture, storage and retrieval is a JPL cultural norm, and what the leadership needs from the NASA knowledge services community to ensure mission success; fostering a culture of openness and learning from mistakes; innovation at JPL; and the impact of storyboarding on the future operations environment for the Mars 2020 rover mission. The community plans to provide updates and accomplishments on a wide variety of topics such as communities of practice and lessons learned activities across the agency.

JPL CKO David Oberhettinger and JPL Knowledge Management Specialist Charles White will host the meeting. Approximately 26 NASA knowledge professionals plan to attend the meeting in person, with five participating virtually. The Knowledge Community’s last face-to-face meeting was in February at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center.
