Department of Transportation drives FKMC to new level.

On June 6, 2014, the Department of Transportation (DOT) hosted the 15th Meeting of the Federal Knowledge Community (FKMC) at DOT’s Navy Yard complex.

The FKMC meets quarterly at participating federal agencies to share strategies for Knowledge Management (KM) and brainstorm creative solutions to make KM more effective within individual agencies, across the federal system, and beyond.

Over forty participants from over two dozen governmental entities attended in-person or online. The presentations of DOT executive leadership Matt Welbes, Executive Director, Federal Transit Administration (FTA) and Susan Camarena, Chief Knowledge Officer, FTA, kicked off the day’s discussions. Steve Newman of Ares Corporation, presented “NASA Knowledge-Based Risks, Case Studies and Video Dashboards,” outlining the innovative work being done in Human Exploration Operations Mission Directorate (HEOMD) for knowledge capture and transfer. The content from Newman’s presentation and the design of the table discussions afterwards initiated thought-provoking applications of KM to the workplace.

One of the most notable improvements for this second meeting held at DOT was the success of virtual participation, which included enhancements through Adobe Connect, featuring chat and virtual break-out rooms for the group problem-solving activity and supporting improved hearing and voice input.

First time attendee, Deadra Welcome, a Department of Energy employee, states, “The meeting was rich with valuable content and contributions from experienced KM professionals across the Federal government. I left the meeting with many creative ideas and a broadened network of colleagues with which to share insightful conversations.”
